Dear Parents and Families,

San Miguel Resource Center is excited to partner with TMS again this year for our Youth Violence Prevention Education Program! Prevention Education Coordinator Liza Cooney is returning to lead the program, and she will hold her first lesson of the year with 7th grade next week on Monday, November 18th. The topic for this upcoming lesson will be Assertive Communication.

About the program: SMRC’s Youth Violence Prevention Education program aims to promote social-emotional skills and reduce rates of youth violence through classroom instruction and small lunch groups. We use an evidence-based curriculum to deliver monthly lessons to all students on the topics of safe and healthy decision-making, resiliency, relationship skills, and more. These lessons augment the existing social-emotional education that TIS provides but with a special focus on safety and violence prevention. Below, you will find a complete list of the lessons we plan to teach this year. Lessons will be taught by our Prevention Education Coordinator (Liza) with support from the classroom teacher (Mo Hanna this month) who always remains in the room.

The topics for 7th Grade this year are:

· Communication – Styles of Communication

· Healthy Relationships – Respecting Boundaries

· Emotion Management – Triggers & Seeking Support

· Identity/Tolerance - Cultural Values

· Bullying Prevention – Bullying Behaviors

· Safety – Digital Safety

· Healthy Relationships – Friendships

We work hard to make sure lessons are age-appropriate and fun for students. We seek teacher and student input throughout the year and may add a topic depending on their needs. If you would like to review our specific lesson plans, please reach out to Liza at education@smrcco.org and she will happily provide them for you! If you would like to opt your student out of a lesson, please reach out to TMHS Principal Sara Kimble at skimble@telluride.k12.co.us

We would like to create an open dialogue with parents and families about potential areas of need regarding students. You are always welcome to observe a class if you are interested in seeing our programming. We value and welcome your feedback and opinions; our contact information is below if you would like to reach out.

We hope everyone has a great school year!

Thanks so much,

Liza Cooney
