Letter to Jr. Parents
Junior Parents:
I wanted to send detailed information about the spring semester of junior year, including college counseling and spring assessments.
Rex Lybrand is our college counselor; he is in the teaching rotation of the junior seminar course to start the college process. Here, students will examine personal and career goals, generate a college application list with safety, match and reach schools, and begin writing the application essay and activities sections of the Common App. If you need to reach Rex, his contact information is rlybrand@telluride.k12.co.us
As part of the state graduation requirements, all students are required to meet criteria set by the state around testing. At the end of junior year we look at all testing data to ensure students have met requirements. There are several options on how to meet the requirements:
SAT test scores
ACT test scores
AP math and English test scores
ASVAB test: This is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Test. The ASVAB is a standardized test that reveals areas of strength and ability in science, math, and language arts, as well as vocational skills and strengths. While this test is put on by the military the results are only provided to THS and not used for any other purposes.
This link provides a detailed menu of option: https://www.cde.state.co.us/postsecondary/graduationguidelinesmenuofoptions09-21-22pdf
Our spring assessment calendar is as follows:
March 8th: all juniors will take the ASVAB test. This is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to meet the graduation requirement prior to senior year.
April 2nd and 3rd: State required CMAS Science test. This will take place during the 2nd period on Tuesday and tutorial on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students not in junior seminar will miss their 2nd period class on Tuesday. This test is mandated by the state and participation ratings have an impact on our overall rating as a district. We have maintained an Accredited with Distinction rating as a district; for the past few years CMAS Science scores have not counted toward our participation but that changes this year and we want to ensure you understand the importance of state assessments toward our rating.
April 24th: SAT: For the first time this will be a digital exam. This is also mandated by the state and participation ratings have an impact on our overall rating as a district. If you would like to opt into the essay portion please let me know by: February 13th.
Thank you for your support in our assessment administrations. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Thank you,
Sara Kimble
